| The New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) was originally known as the New England
Women's 6 Conference, and then called the New England Women's 8 Conference
(NEW8). The Conference began in 1985 with charter members consisting of 6 institutions; Babson College, Brandeis University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Wheaton College. The conference expanded in 1988, when it accepted two more institutions as members, Mount Holyoke College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. At this time the Conference changed its name from the New England Women's 6 Conference to the New England Women's 8 Conference. At the conclusion of 1995, Brandeis University withdrew from the conference and Clark University was accepted into the conference to maintain the membership at eight. In 1999, with the addition of Springfield College and the Coast Guard Academy, the NEW8 Conference became NEWMAC. At this time the conference sponsored conference play and championships for men's teams and continued to sponsor conference play and championships for the women's teams. NEWMAC sponsors competition in the following sports: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, golf, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, softball, track and field, and volleyball. The conference criterion for membership is emphasis on academics, and similarity in athletic philosophy and competition in sponsored sports. |
