DIRECTOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation invites applications for the Director of Physical Education.
General Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Department Head of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation/Director
of Athletics, this position will provide leadership and development, curricular
guidance, facilitation and management of a comprehensive, required, Physical
Education program. The Director of Physical Education is responsible for oversight
and management of budgets, technical registration systems, course registration,
instructor class assignments, facilities reservations, and staff evaluation.
Responsibilities also include issue identification and resolution, and the design
and implementation of high-performance processes for the staff.
This position will collect and review statistical data on course registrations, provide oversight of course development and execution, and stay abreast of “best practice” and change philosophies in the area of physical education. Additionally, this position is expected to help the leadership teams in the Department (strategic and operational) identify, develop and maintain effective relationships with other MIT constituencies who may benefit from closer relations with the department’s educational initiatives or whose interests intersect in important ways.
The Director of Physical Education will be entrusted with the mission of taking the strategic direction and vision for physical education from concept to reality utilizing a collaborative and inclusive management approach.
Requirements:
Five or more years of administrative experience in Physical Education program
management is required. Master’s or Doctoral degree holders in Physical
Education will receive highest consideration. Proven interest and/or expertise
in curriculum design with special emphasis on creation and retention of relevant
courses for students is essential. Ability to fit within the context of a department
that is dedicated to excellence in education, competition, and recreational
pursuits. Evidence of outstanding teaching and understanding of pedagogy as
well as experience in the evaluation and professional development of faculty
members is imperative. Experience in managing budgets and accounting processes
is essential. Must be a team-oriented, positive problem solver. Candidates who
can maintain a broad perspective while managing details are highly desirable.
