NEWMAC Announces 2004 All-Conference Baseball Team Wheaton’s Keith Cooper Named Player of the Year
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wheaton College senior outfielder Keith Cooper (Swampscott, MA) was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year. Cooper helped lead the Lyons to a 9-3 conference record and the first seed in the NEWMAC Championship for the sixth straight year. Through games Sunday, April 25, he was seventh in the conference in batting average (.372), third in RBI (39), third in doubles (11), fifth in runs scored (27), fifth in stolen bases (8) and first in triples (5). The senior was also named to the all-conference first team for the second consecutive year. Senior pitcher Trevor Alexander (Wilton, ME) joins Copper on the first team. Babson, who won the NEWMAC Championship for the first time in the history of the conference, had three players selected to the all-conference first team. Leading the way was sophomore catcher Ted Dziuba (Wayne, NJ). Dziuba was fourth in the league in batting average (.392), second in home runs (7), first in RBI (45) and second in runs scored (31). Joining Dziuba on the all-conference first team are teammates, senior pitcher Jason Kosow (Exeter, NH) and junior pitcher Jimmy Burke (Milton, MA). Kosow was ranked second in the NEWMAC in ERA (2.26) with 55.2 innings pitched and second in strikeouts (50). Burked, who was ranked fourth in winning percentage with 6-1, led the conference with 53 strikeouts and was sixth in ERA (2.68).
Babson’s head coach Matt Noone, who led the Beavers to a 8-4 NEWMAC record, was named Coach of the Year while leading Babson to four straight wins in the tournament to claim the title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Babson defeated Clark (10-1), Coast Guard (8-6), Wheaton (9-0) and Springfield (8-3) en route to the championship. Wheaton had won five straight conference championships.
Completing the all-conference first team was Clark’s senior outfielder Dave McNamara (Worcester, MA), Coast Guard’s senior outfielder Aaron Meredith (Montville, CT), Springfield’s senior pitcher Todd Royce (Chester, NH) and WPI’s sophomore second baseman Nick Angelini (Braintree, MA).
Coast Guards’s Chuck Arena (Houston, TX) was named Rookie of the Year. Arena, an outfielder, was 13th in the conference batting average (.346) and had a .386 average in conference games. He struck out just three times in 108 plate appearances and did not make an error in NEWMAC games on 24 chances.
Babson’s senior outfielder Mike Muccio (Northboro, MA), Clark’s senior infielder Michael Burnham (Hadley, MA), Coast Guard’s junior shortstop Nick Anderson (Westerly, RI), MIT’s junior pitcher/shortstop Mike Batty (Golden Valley, MN), MIT’s sophomore second baseman Wayne Duggan (Hazel Green, AL), MIT’s sophomore catcher Kyle Zeller (Sea Ranch Lake, FL), Springfield’s junior shortstop Matt Basteri (Melrose, MA), Springfield’s junior outfielder/catcher Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, MA), Wheaton’s first-year shortstop Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA) and WPI’s TJ McLaughlin (Manchester, CT) were all named to the all-conference second team.
