2002 NEWMAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT 
Wheaton Downs Springfield, 19-5 in Opening Round Contest 

NORTON, MA- Senior Chris Denorfia (Southington, CT/Choate-Rosemary School) 
drove in six runs and scored three more, while junior hurler Mike Hunsinger 
(Fall River, MA/Durfee) improved to a perfect 6-0 on the mound, as the 
Wheaton College baseball team downed Springfield, 19-5 in a New England 
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal round 
game at Sidell Stadium. 

The Lyons scored early and often, hammering out 21 hits while posting at 
least a run in every inning but one. Wheaton held a commanding 9-0 lead 
heading into the third, thanks to a seven-run outburst in the second. 
Denorfia accounted for three RBI and two runs alone in the first two 
stanzas. Springfield countered with two runs in the top of the third, 
but the Lyons answered with three of their own, spearheaded by a Denorfia 
two-run triple. 

Denorfia finished the contest 3-for-5 with six RBI, three runs scored 
and an RBI, while senior Will Bissonnette (Roslindale, MA/Boston Latin) 
went 4-for-5 with four RBI, two run scored and three doubles. Sophomore 
Joe DeMartino (W. Barnstable, MA/Barnstable) was 3-for-4 with a run scored, 
while junior Scott Beattie (Sanford, ME/Sanford) and sophomore Tim Ziakas 
(Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) added two hits apiece in the victory. The Pride's 
Toby Cole (Blue Hill, ME/George Stevens Academy) was the lone multiple 
hitter in the game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. 

Hunsinger worked seven innings for Wheaton, scattering seven hits with 
six strikeouts and a pair of walks. Springfield's Brian Royal 
(Orange, MA/Cushing Academy) was saddled with the loss, allowing nine 
hits while fanning two batters and issuing a walk in 1.1 innings. 
Wheaton remains at home to face Babson, who defeated Coast Guard, 
7-6 in 13 innings at the tournament's second site. Springfield will 
travel to Babson to face Coast Guard.
