2004 NEWMAC MEN'S BASKETBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

WORCESTER, MA- The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) men's basketball team was well represented at this year's postseason meeting held at WPI, as the Engineers swept all the major New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) awards Tuesday morning in Worcester. WPI sophomore guard Mike Prestileo (South Windsor, CT) was selected New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year by the league's coaches in today's all-conference voting, while teammate Ryan Cain (Webster, MA) garnered NEWMAC Rookie-of-the-Year accolades. Head coach Chris Bartley was tabbed NEWMAC Coach of the Year in his third season with the Engineers.

Prestileo helped lead WPI to its first regular season conference championship in the six-year history of the NEWMAC. Ranked among the nation's elite in three-point field goal percentage, Prestileo currently stands among the conference leaders in an impressive five statistical categories. He is first in three-point field goal percentage (.479), second in three-point field goals made per game (3.0), third in free throw percentage (.789), fifth in scoring (16.4 PPG) and eighth in field goal percentage (.468). Prestileo was a two-time NEWMAC Player of the Week.

Cain started in all 12 conference games for the Engineers and is currently among the top two players in two statistical categories. He ranks second in three-point field goal percentage (.468) and free throw percentage (.838). Cain was named Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Rookie of the Week an impressive four times this season. Bartley has guided WPI to its second most successful season in program history with 19 wins and its fastest start in school history by winning 16 of its first 18 games. The Engineers have improved their win total by 12 victories and went from the seventh seed to the top seed in the conference tournament in just one year's time. Bartley and WPI will compete in the ECAC Division III New England Regional Tournament as the second seed, where they will host Curry College this Wednesday.

Out of the ten all-conference team selections, only two were repeat winners from a season ago, led by four-year choice Dave McNamara (Worcester, MA) of Clark. Senior Scott Mahan (Bridgewater, MA) of Wheaton earned a spot on the team for the second consecutive season. Rounding out the first team winners were Prestileo, senior Luke Weber (Highland Mills, NY) of Babson and Springfield sophomore Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, MA), who was the 2003 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. The second team features junior CJ Enere (Hyde Park, MA) of Babson, sophomore Tim Dutille (Lebanon, NH) of Clark, sophomore Dan Sheppard (El Cajon, CA) of Coast Guard, sophomore Mike D'Auria (Newton, MA) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and junior Josean Vega (Pawtucket, RI) of Wheaton.
