The first
year of conference competition in the sport of lacrosse was 1990 when Wellesley
College captured the regular season championship. Smith College was NEW
8 regular season champion in 1991 and 1992. Mount Holyoke College defeated
Smith in the finals of the conference's first tournament in 1993, and repeated
the feat in 1994. Wellesley wrestled the crown away in 1995 and then won
again in 1996. Brandeis University and WPI do not compete in lacrosse on
a varsity basis. MIT joined Conference play in lacrosse in the 1993 season.
Clark replaced Brandeis as a conference member in 1995, but joined WPI as
the two non-varsity playing lacrosse schools in the NEW 8. The last NEW
8 Championship was held in 1998 and was won be Wellesley. In 1998, the conference
began sponsorship of men's sports and changed the name to the New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Wellesley won the first NEWMAC Championship
with an 8-7 victory over Springfield College. In 2000, Wellelsey won the
NEWMAC tournament by defeating Smith 23-7 in the finals. Wellesley captured
their fourth consecutive title in 2001 with a 13-10 victory over Springfield.
In 2002, Springfield was crowned the NEWMAC Champion after winning the regular
season and, after defeating Wheaton 7-5 in the tournament final. Wheaton
captured its first NEWMAC women's lacrosse title with a 10-7 victory over
Springfield in the 2003 tournament final, and repeated its championship
in 2004, again by defeating Springfield College in the finals.
