For Immediate Release- April 27, 2002 Contact - Scott Dietz 508-286-376 Sports Information Director 2002 NEWMAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Wheaton Eliminates Coast Guard with 4-0 Victory NORTON, MA- Sophomore Jackie Demling (Norwood, MA/Norwood) fired a two-hit shutout and junior Maren Schrader (Canby, OR/Canby) went a perfect 3-for-3 for the Wheaton College softball team, as the Lyons eliminated Coast Guard, 4-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament third semifinal round game at Clark Field. Wheaton awaits the loser of today's final contest between Clark and Springfield. The Lyons will host tomorrow morning's game at 11:00 a.m. The hosts picked up two runs in the second and a pair more in the third, while Demling struck out nine Bear batters to advance to Sunday's finals round. In the second, first-year Meghan Malloy (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) reached and advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored off the bat of senior Lucy Campbell (Anson, ME/Carrabec). Sophomore Amanda Dow-Allen (Greenfield, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) pushed home Campbell with an RBI double to extend Wheaton's advantage to 2-0. In the third, Malloy drove in a run and sophomore Brianna Shawah (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) registered a sacrifice hit to double the Lyons' lead. Junior Leslie Kagami (Honolulu, HI) and first-year Jen Paulson (Richmond, RI) recorded the lone singles for Coast Guard in the first and third innings, respectively.
