2002 NEWMAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Springfield Blanks Clark To Advance To Championship NORTON, MA- Freshman pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, MA/Cardinal Spellman) went the distance, posted a home run in the third and knocked in an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to lead the Pride to a 3-0 win over Clark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament fourth semifinal round game at Clark Field. Advancing to the championship round Sunday afternoon, Springfield will face the winner of tomorrow's 11:00 a.m. game between Clark and Wheaton. The Cougars put forth a rally attempt in the fifth, but were unable to get past second due in part to Pearson's solid pitching performance. Pearson allowed five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. The Pride's defense also assisted with getting out of the inning unscathed. With one out and runners on first and second for Clark, Springfield went to third on two consecutive plays to end the inning and the Cougars final threat of the afternoon. Senior Holly Scavone (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) dropped to 12-4 on the year for Clark, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Senior Aimee Lee (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) came on in relief in the seventh. 2002 NEWMAC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Game 4: Springfield 3, Clark 0 SCORING 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E Clark (25-9) 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 1 Springfield (20-20) 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 3 5 1 Clark: Holly Scavone (12-4) Aimee Lee (7) and Lynne Casey Springfield: Brianne Pearson (15-12) and Missy Edwards HR: Springfield- Brianne Pearson Multiple Hitters: Springfield- Missy Edwards 2; Clark- Aimee Lee 2 |
