NEW 8 Swimming
and Diving championships began in 1996 in an invitational format. The first
invitational was hosted by Wellesley College and no team scores were kept.
In 1997, the invitational was at Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley was
the champion with 715 points. In 1998, Wellesley hosted and won the first
official championship in NEW 8 history. The following year, the conference
began sponsoring men's sports and changed the name to the New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference. The first NEWMAC Championship was held at
Mount Holyoke and Wellesley continued its dominance by edging out newcomer
Springfield College. In 2000, Wellesley won its fourth consecutive conference
championship. In 2001, Springfield won its first conference championship.
After capturing the title in 2002, Springfield was crowned the 2003 NEWMAC
Champion to earn its third consecutive championship. Springfield matched
the winning streak set by Wellesley after seizing its fourth consecutive
championship in 2004.
