DIVISION III FIELD HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - FIRST ROUND
Babson
Tops Utica, 5-2, For First NCAA Tournament Win
Shrewsbury, MA native Elise Conley nets three goals in victory
BABSON PARK,
Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Elise Conley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored
three goals, including the game-winner, to lead the host Babson
College Beavers to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Utica College
Pioneers in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Field
Hockey Championship Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. With the
win, Babson (19-5) advances to the second round at Ursinus College,
where the Beavers will face Cortland State on Saturday, November
12, at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, Utica sees its spectacular season come
to an end with a record of 12-5.
Conley put Babson
on the board just under 10 minutes into the contest, as she blasted
a shot off a direct corner inside the left post at 9:37. Senior
tri-captain Katie Janson (Easton, Pa.) and sophomore Annie Pease
(Waterville, Maine) both picked up assists on the goal, which was
Conley’s 31st of the year, breaking her own school record
for goals in a season.
The Beavers
made it 2-0 less than five minutes later, as senior Gina Giardina
(St. Louis, Mo.) put back a rebound of Janson’s shot at 14:24.
Conley then scored on another direct corner shot from Janson and
Pease at 19:52, giving the home team a 3-0 cushion.
Utica got one
goal back in the closing moments of the first half, as first-year
Katie Kutas (New York Mills, N.Y.) scored her team-leading 12th
goal of the fall out of a scramble in front with 49.7 seconds remaining.
That would cut Babson’s lead to 3-1 heading into the break,
but Janson scored off a rebound just over 12 minutes into the second
stanza to push her team’s advantage back to three.
The Pioneers
continued to battle down the stretch, getting back to within two
when junior Amanda Iannello (Verona, N.Y.) assisted senior Shannon
Rohacek’s (Little Falls, N.Y.) 11th goal of the year off a
penalty corner with 16:45 remaining. However, Conley finished off
her fourth hat trick of the season with her Division III-leading
33rd goal on a penalty stroke with 10:01 left to play, as Babson
held on for the 5-2 victory.
First-year goalie
Elissa Slovin (Andover, Mass.) made three saves in net for Babson,
while Beavers’ sophomore Michele Farley (Skowhegan, Maine)
added a key defensive save late in the first half. First-year Amanda
McDonnell (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) stopped a total of eight shots
in goal for Utica.
