PETE BARRY STEPS DOWN AS COAST GUARD BASEBALL COACH
C.C. GRANT NAMED HEAD COACH

NEW LONDON, CONN.--Pete Barry, who has been the head baseball coach at the Coast Guard Academy for the past seven seasons, stepped down on Monday to concentrate on his duties as the head basketball coach. He will be succeeded by C.C. Grant, an assistant under Barry for the past seven seasons.

Grant, who is also the defensive coordinator for the football team, will remain in that capacity during the fall season. Grant has handled the winter preseason program for the baseball team for the past seven seasons while Barry was finishing up the Bears basketball season.

“Pete Barry has provided us with great contributions to the baseball program during his time as both an assistant and as the head baseball coach. He helped us make a smooth transition from the three decades of coach Don Pinhey’s era to making the transition in the NEWMAC,” said Dr. Ray Cieplik, Coast Guard Academy Director of Athletics. “However, the demands of intercollegiate athletics make it difficult to coach in overlapping seasons. The basketball season begins in mid-October and carries through the entire winter. At the end of each basketball season Pete would literally take off his suit and tie, put on his baseball uniform, and head south during spring break for the start of the spring outdoor season. Being the head coach in those two sports can be taxing over the long haul.”

Barry posted a 115-117-1 record during his seven seasons and led the Bears to a remarkable six straight appearances in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament and the school’s first ever postseason win in 2002. Barry led the team to the NEWMAC Championship Game in 2000, 2001 and 2003. He was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2001.

“Pete’s enthusiasm for the game and his knowledge of baseball were appreciated by everyone connected with the program. I am confident that C.C. Grant will continue our fine tradition,” said Cieplik.
