Judy
Strong Named to NCAA Division I 25th Anniversary Team for Field
Hockey
Northampton,
MA: Judy Strong, head field hockey coach at Smith College, has been
selected as a member of the NCAA Division I 25th Anniversary Team
for Field Hockey.
A
graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Strong competed for
four years in field hockey and played on the 1979-80 lacrosse team
that won the Division I New England championship. In 1981, Strong
was named to the NCAA All Tournament team for Division I field hockey
and tagged National Player of the Year in the same year. Inducted
into the UMASS Hall of Fame for field hockey and lacrosse in 1997,
Strong was a member of the 1980 and 1984 Olympic field hockey teams,
winning the bronze medal in 1984. A member of the 1981and 1982 National
Sports Festival team and the 1983 World Cup team, she has also coached
in Olympic developmental camps. She served as a member of the NCAA
Field Hockey Northeast Region ranking committee from 1989 to 1991
and a member of the NFCA Regional All America Selection Committee
from 2002-04. Strong is currently in her 18th year at the helm of
Smith’s field hockey program.
The
25th anniversary of NCAA women’s championships will be celebrated
throughout the 2005-06 championship season. NCAA Division I and
III women’s field hockey began in 1981 and will be celebrating
their 25th Anniversary at the 2005 championships in November. To
commemorate this milestone two 25th Anniversary Teams consisting
each of 11 student-athletes and one coach have been named for each
division.
