Basketball Coach, Kathy Hagerstrom, Earns 200th Career Win
WELLESLEY, Ma.
- Saturday’s conference win, 71-62, over Clark University
marked the 200th career victory for head coach Kathy Hagerstrom.
She is in her 15th season at the helm of the Blue’s basketball
team and now boasts an overall career record of 200-133.
After
an evenly played first five minutes, with a 10-8 Wellesley edge
at 14:45, the Blue spent the rest of the first half gathering a
substantial lead. Sefi Adasi (Rockville, MD) hit two three-pointers
in the final four minutes of the half to give the Blue a 34-23 advantage
at intermission.
Clark came on
strong in the second half, opening up the scoring with a 9-2 run.
The Cougars, now only trailing 36-32, cut Wellesley’s lead
to just 4 with 18:12 left to play in the contest. On a jumper from
junior co-captain, Ashley Auclair (Williamsburg, MA), Clark would
tie the game at 43 with 13:20 remaining on the clock. The teams
traded buckets over the next six minutes until Adasi made an inside
basket with 6:47 left to help the Blue go ahead 55-50. Thanks to
the sharp shooting of Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, CT) and Laura
Weslander (Mendota Heights, MN), Wellesley stretched their lead
to 14 with 2:57 on the clock. Clark continued to pressure the Blue,
causing three Wellesley turnovers, and, with 1:20 left to play,
Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, ME) hit a huge basket to bring the Cougars
back within 4 points, 66-62. Roderigue’s bucket, however,
would prove to be Clark’s last. Doeberl converted on 4 foul
shoots in the last minute of action to help Wellesley regain a comfortable
lead and win the contest, 71-62.
Doeberl led
Wellesley scorers with 21 points and also grabbed 9 rebounds. Adasi,
notching a double-double, also had an outstanding afternoon with
13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior co-captain, Laura Weslander (Mendota
Heights, MN) contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Courtney
Pelley (Leicester, MA) chipped in 10 points and dished out 6 assists.
Andrea Comen
(Holden, MA) led Clark with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Carolyn Towle (Southbridge, MA) and Roderigue both added 12 points
for the Cougars.
