Wellesley College senior rower Monique Abrishami has
been selected as a 2006 NCAA Spring Postgraduate Scholarship
winner. The two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference

Deanna Lentz, MIT's
Woman Athlete of the Year, was named the winner of CSTV's
third annual Diane Geppi-Aikens Scholarship. The $5,000
scholarship was awarded by CSTV's Executive Vice President,
Tim Pernetti, at the Tewaaraton Trophy Awards Ceremony
on June 1 at the National Geographic Society in Washington,

Wheaton
Baseball Completes Monumental Season with Loss in National
Title Game
The
Wheaton College baseball team's quest for a national
championship fell just short Tuesday at the NCAA Division
III Tournament, as the Lyons completed their monumental
season with a 7-2 loss to Marietta College at Fox Cities
Stadium. Wheaton reached the title game in just its
ninth year of varsity action, surpassing the program
record with 42 wins while finishing their most successful
season with a 42-10 mark. Wheaton's journey including
capturing an eighth New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship, seventh
conference tournament title, first New England crown
and inaugural appearance in a national championship.

Stacy Kelly, an administrative

Ethnic/Women’s Minority Internship grant program.

Hyer Retires as Head Lacrosse Coach at
Mount Holyoke College
Mount Holyoke Director
of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education Laurie
Priest recently announced Mike Hyer's retirement as
head lacrosse coach after 20 years at the helm. Hyer
will remain as senior lecturer in physical education
for one more year. Head Soccer Coach and Assistant Lacrosse
Coach Jennifer Seferiadis will serve as interim lacrosse

Grills Named Irving T. Marsh Award Recipient
The
Eastern College Athletic Conference Sports Information
Directors Association (ECAC-SIDA) has announced that
Carole Grills of Smith College is the 2006 recipient
of the prestigious Irving T. Marsh Award recognizing
dedication, contribution and excellence in the field
of collegiate sports information and media relations.
The first woman in New England in the college division
to receive this award, Grills also celebrates her silver
anniversary this year as the college’s Sports
Information Director. First presented in 1966, the award
is named after Irving T. Marsh, the ECAC Service Bureau
founder and director until his retirement in 1973. (more)
Royer Prepares for New Role at MIT
Candace L. Royer, Director of MIT Athletics
and Head of the Department of Athletics, Physical Education
and Recreation (DAPER), has been named Senior Associate
Dean in the Division of Student Life, Larry G. Benedict,
Dean for Student Life, announced recently. Royer, who
has served in her current role since 2001, will assume
her new post on February 1, 2007, following a six-month
sabbatical leave beginning August 1, 2006. Royer’s
transition follows a six-year stint as DAPER Department
Head, where she was vitally involved in shaping policy
and procedure for one of the largest athletic programs
in the nation; featuring 41 intercollegiate varsity
teams and 35 club sports programs. At the time of her
appointment, Royer became the first woman to head an
athletic department within the Ivy League-plus circle.

Barry Steps Down as Coast Guard Baseball Coach
C.C. Grant Named Head Coach
Pete Barry, who has been the head baseball coach at
the Coast Guard Academy for the past seven seasons,
stepped down on Monday to concentrate on his duties
as the head basketball coach. He will be succeeded by
C.C. Grant, an assistant under Barry for the past seven

Northampton, MA:
Bonnie May, volleyball and softball coach at Smith College,
is leaving the coaching ranks at the end of her current
softball season to assume the position of Assistant
Athletic Director at the college. May has served as
Smith’s volleyball coach since 1980 and softball

Kathy Mangano Wins 400th Softball Game
Springfield, MA: Springfield College Head Softball
Coach Kathy Mangano notched victories number 399 and
400 in a doubleheader sweep of MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In the process, Kathy became just the 26th coach in
Division III history (among coaches who have spent a
minimum of 10 years in that division) to reach the magic

Callahan Named Head Baseball Coach at WPI
Worcester, MA - WPI Director of Physical Education,
Recreation and Athletics, Dana L. Harmon, announced
that Michael Callahan has been hired as Head Baseball
Coach. Callahan had been serving as the interim head

A pair of first-time honorees earned NEWMAC Men's

United States Coast Guard Academy's
John Westkott was voted NEWMAC Men's Coach of the Year
in his seventh season, while Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT) third-year coach Dawn Gerken was
named women's coach of the year. Peter Avdoulos was
tabbed men's diving coach of the year in his 21st campaign
at Springfield and Smith's Kim Bierwert earned women's
diving coach-of-the-year laurels in his 29th season
with the Pioneers.

College's Derek Yvon Reaches 2,000 Points
Springfield
College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.)
reached the 2,000-point mark and later became the school's
all-time leading scorer in the Pride's 83-67 win against
Clark. Yvon,
a graduate of Cathedral High School, needed 28 points
to surpass former Pride standout Hassan Robinson (’95),
and the senior guard did just that, netting a game-best
29 points as he now has accumulated 2,005 points to
date in his illustrious career.

III Tournament. The Lyons, who are ranked 20th nationally
and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), will face Tufts University
in a sectional semifinal Saturday at Oneonta State College
(NY) at 1:30 p.m. In nine years at Wheaton, head coach
Luis Reis has compiled an overall mark of 175-27-6 (.856),

Elise Conley nets three goals in victory
Senior tri-captain Elise Conley (Shrewsbury, Mass.),
the nation's Division III leading scorer and the NEWMAC
player of the year, scored three goals, including the
game-winner, to lead the host Babson College Beavers to
a 5-2 victory over the visiting Utica College Pioneers
in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Field
Hockey Championship Tournament. With the win, Babson (19-5)
advances to the second round at Ursinus College, where
the Beavers will face Cortland State on Saturday, November

Wheaton, which is ranked 18th nationally and third in

double overtime in Sunday's New England Women's and Men's

Southall has been named an assistant men’s basketball
coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, according to
WPI Head Coach Chris Bartley. A native of Windsor, CT,
Southall graduated from Springfield College in 2002 with
a bachelor of science degree in Movement Studies. He then
served as a graduate assistant coach at Springfield for
two years, earning his masters degree in Physical Education

announced the promotion of Scott Dietz to Assistant Director
of Athletics for Media Relations. Dietz has been employed

2000. "Having
the opportunity to announce this promotion shows that
excellent work, tireless effort and being a total team
player truly does pay off," said Yowell. "I
would be hard-pressed to find an employee more deserving

| Wheaton
College Executive Director of Athletics, Chad Yowell,
has announced the hiring of Kelli Myers as head women's
volleyball coach, effective August 15, 2005. Myers replaces
Elizabeth Rey, who resigned after four seasons with the
Lyons. Myers was the head women's volleyball coach at
the University of Connecticut for the past seven years,
where she guided the Huskies to five Big East Championship
appearances during her tenure. Leading UConn to a share
of the regular season conference championship in 1998,
Myers finished her Husky career with the second-highest
number of coaching wins in program history with a 134-78
