History
Competition in crew began in 1992 with Mount Holyoke College winning the inaugural championship. MIT then ran off a streak of four straight titles before being upended in 1997 by Mount Holyoke. The last official NEW 8 championship in 1998 went to Smith College who won their first title. Clark joined the NEW 8 in 1995 replacing Brandeis University as a full member. In 1998, the conference began sponsoring men's sports and changed the name to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The first championship was won by Smith as they became the second school to win back-to-back titles. In 1999, WPI joined the crew ranks to bring the number of competing crews in the conference to seven including Coast Guard who joined the conference during the expansion in 1998. MIT was crowned the 2000 NEWMAC Champion after winning the championship. In 2001, MIT won their second straight and sixth ever championship. In 2002, Smith was crowned the NEWMAC Champion after winning the varsity 8 race and earned the conference's first automatic qualifier to the NCAA's by winning both the varsity 8 and 2nd varsity 8 races. Wellesley captured the 2003 NEWMAC title by winning the varsity 8 race. In 2004, Smith College swept all four races of the NEWMAC championship.
