Coach of the Year: Karen Klinger, Smith College
Smith Crew Coach Garners Second Consecutive
Coach of the Year Award
From a Smith College release
Worcester,
MA: Karen Klinger, the Head Women’s Crew Coach at Smith College,
has been voted New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year for the second consecutive
year. Klinger has been the head coach of Smith Crew since 1997.
Smith Crew successfully defended their conference title at Saturday’s
NEWMAC Championship, sweeping all four races en route to their third
consecutive conference title. With the victory, Smith captured its
7th conference title in nine years and also took home the Florence
Jope Smith Cup, given to the institution earning the most points
at the championship.
This
year marks the fourth time in eight years that Klinger has been
named the conference’s top coach, earning similar accolades
in 1999, 2002 and 2005. A 1987 graduate of Smith, Klinger has coached
at Tufts University, Northeastern University and the University
of Delaware. Upon her return to Smith in 1997, the Pioneers have
garnered 5 Seven Sisters championships, 7 NEWMAC championships,
1 New England and ECAC title and 3 NCAA Rowing Championship appearances,
with the 2004 & 2005 teams finishing second in the country in
Division III.
Klinger
has been a member of US Rowing since 1983, the Collegiate Rowing
Coaches Association (CRCA) Board of Directors since 1999, and President
to the organization since 2002. She currently serves on the US Rowing
Board of Directors. She is a member of the New England Championships
and ECAC Regatta Seeding Committees. Klinger was chosen Division
III Rowing Coach of the Year in 2002 by the CRCA membership.
