NEW 8 Swimming and Diving championships began in 1996 in an invitational format. The first invitational was hosted by Wellesley College and no team scores were kept. In 1997, the invitational was at Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley was the champion with 715 points. In 1998, Wellesley hosted and won the first official championship in NEW 8 history. The following year, the conference began sponsoring men's sports and changed the name to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The first NEWMAC Championship was held at Mount Holyoke and Wellesley continued its dominance by edging out newcomer Springfield College. In 2000, Wellesley won its fourth consecutive conference championship. In 2001, Springfield won its first conference championship. After capturing the title in 2002, Springfield was crowned the 2003 NEWMAC Champion to earn its third consecutive championship. Springfield matched the winning streak set by Wellesley after seizing its fourth consecutive championship in 2004.
