Springfield Captures Seventh Straight NEWMAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Springfield netted its seventh straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship on Sunday evening in Wellesley College’s Chandler Pool.  The Pride, who finished with 812.5 points, capped off the three-day, 20 event championship with seven first place finishes.  MIT captured second place with 717.5 points with six top finishes on the weekend.  Wellesley nabbed third with 612 points, while Wheaton was on the host’s heels with 602.5 points for a fourth place finish.

On the final night of competition, the 2007 NEWMAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Champions earned wins in four of the evening’s seven events. The Pride’s Emily Sheahan took the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:45.79, while Kallie Pottle captured first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.58.  Both wins granted the swimmers NCAA “B” cuts in their respective events.  Springfield’s Moira Price set a new conference record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a NCAA “A” cut time of 2:20.95.  Pottle’s and Price’s wins marked their second on the weekend as Pottle won the 100 backstroke on Saturday evening, finishing in 1:00.46 and Price took top honors in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:06:38. Pottle and Price then combined with Meaghan O’Hara and Julianne McCormick to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:36.00.  In diving action, MIT’s Doria Holbrook won the 3-Meter event, scoring 514.85.  Holbrook had won 1-Meter event earlier in the weekend.
