Track & Field competition officially began in 1994 with a meet at MIT won by WPI. Mount Holyoke College captured the title in 1995 at WPI. The 1996 championship was won by Wheaton College. Smith College captured their first championship in 1997. Wheaton regained the title in the last official NEW 8 championship in 1998. In 1998-99 the conference began sponsoring men's sports and changed the name to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The first championship was hosted by Smith and was won by Wheaton. Wheaton repeated as conference champion in 2000. Wheaton continued to dominate the NEWMAC championships with conference titles in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and followed each of those conference titles by winning the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Wheaton captured its seventh straight conference championship by winning the 2004 NEWMAC Championship.
