itunesOn February 25, Apple reached its landmark 10 billionth download on iTunes. That’s right, more than ten billion songs have been purchased from iTunes since its inception. For those that are curious, the ten billionth download was a Johnny Cash song, titled, “Guess Things Happen That Way,” and the customer who downloaded the song won a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

With a sales record that impressive, one would think that Apple’s iTunes has been around since the beginning of time. The truth of the matter is, however, that iTunes has only been around for seven years. And in only seven years time, iTunes has become a common household name that will surely be a mainstay for the foreseeable future.

Apple’s iTunes is now in its 9th version. As with all other versions of iTunes, iTunes 9 is available for free download, and is definitely something everybody wants installed to their computer. Apple’s iTunes is a must have for PC and Mac users alike, as it is hands down the best way to catalog and play music, television shows and movies.

For those who are as of yet still unfamiliar with iTunes, a brief tutorial in iTunes 9 would probably be quite helpful. The following explains a few of the highlights that iTunes 9 offers to consumers:

• Home Sharing: With iTunes 9, consumers can share their music, television shows and movies among up to five computers in one household. With home sharing, the computers in a household form a network of sorts and essentially share one iTunes library. In this manner, any download made on one home computer is readily available to the other computers in the household.

• Genius Mixes: Genius Mix is an amazing little feature that actually creates playlists for iTunes owners. Genius Mix scans an iTunes library for songs that go well together and puts them together in multiple mixes. Moreover, Genius Mix recommends new music to consumers based on the content of their library.

• Easy Syncing: The newest version of iTunes is by far the easiest so far when it comes to syncing with the iPhone or the iPod Touch. It is simpler than ever for consumers to arrange applications how they want on their iTunes and have their changes transferred to their handheld device.

• All the top hits: Any discussion of iTunes would be incomplete without mentioning that the selection is incredible. All of the latest and greatest hits are available on iTunes. Music, movies and television series are all available at the click of a mouse.

With all that iTunes offers, it really comes as no surprise that it has now sold ten billion songs. Media enthusiasts without an iTunes library have much to gain from a simple free iTunes download.
