With any luck, you are bound to find several tricks and tips about your iMac that you just didn’t know about. Macintosh computers are loaded with all kinds of great shortcuts and convenience features. It is also good to know that you can set many preferences and tweak your computer so it works just the way you want. See if you don’t find at least three or more great tips you didn’t know about.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Did you know that there are over 240 keyboard shortcuts? You obviously won’t be using them all, but just knowing a few great shortcuts can certainly come in handy. Open any folders and files right off your desktop without having to close your current applications by hitting the “F11″ key.

The perfect key for that panic situation when your application locks up or freezes. Press the “Command-Option-ESC”. This takes you to the force-quit mode where you can immediately quit the program that is not responding.

Have you ever wondered how to take a quick screen shot? Just press “Shift-Control-3″ and instantly you have a complete screen shot with everything including dialogue boxes.

Keep your iMac Running Smoothly

You probably don’t realize it but if you install a whole bunch of files on your desktop or many dashboard widgets, you can slow your computer down. These applications and icons are constantly updating and refreshing in the background taking up resources.

It’s hard to resist, but keep a tight rain on how much space is available in your startup drive. If you push your space to the limit, it can bog down your computer.

Enhance Leopard for Free

Adium is free and provides instant messaging for use with GTalk, AIM and MSN.

Skype specifically designed for the Mac OS X allows you to make phone calls through your computer.

Take your choice of any of these free web browsers to customize your iMac. Check out Flock, Shiira, Camino, Opera or Firefox. Have fun customizing, keep it simple and enjoy a fine computer.
